Annual Industry Mixer Draws over 150 students to UofAlberta Student Innovation Center

The annual Industry Mixer on November 22 brought out nearly 200 people to the Student Innovation Center at the University of Alberta to network and share about different career opportunities.

The event was a joint affair of WiSER (Women in Science, Engineering & Research) and MentorUP Alberta. The goal was to facilitate students, companies and professionals to network and to engage in innovations and entrepreneurship in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). More than 150 students and 15 companies participated.

Geared toward graduate students and post-docs, the event also aimed to inform students who were looking for employers about the emerging technologies in Alberta. The 2-hour evening included keynote speeches and networking mixer.

The two speakers for the evening, Gail Powley and James Keirstead, are both professionals in the field of technology, and both members of Rainforest Alberta, an organization for like-minded people working together to improve Alberta’s innovation ecosystem. The speeches addressed the needs to foster innovations through spurring collision of ideas. The speakers encouraged the audience to recognize and act upon local talents to prosper Edmonton’s future of innovations.

While this event focused on connecting students with professionals in STEM fields, University of Alberta Career Centre kindly provided free rapid resume review for students who wished to have their resumes polished.

This event was proudly sponsored by Levven Electronics Ltd., Eyes High, priMED, YEG cycle, and Chianti Café. Continuous support of grants for WiSER and MentorUP were from Shell Canada and AWSN, respectively.
